It’s weird to think that four years ago I started with The Sunburst, taking blurry photos of track and field. Now, after spending the last two years as photo editor, I’m the one in charge. I have never been one with words; I find it quite hard to put my thoughts to paper. I connect more with pictures and songs. So the change this year from photo editor to editor-in-chief is a stark contrast, but I knew from the start (Laufey reference) that being editor-in-chief has always been something that I would be interested in the future.

But the future is now, and I’m ready to show Del Oro how I view the world through more than just the camera lens. Being part of the second graduating class in the history of Del Oro (and the first to spend all four years here) feels like a lot of pressure, as well as being the second editor-in-chief of The Sunburst, especially after working with so many talented people last year who taught and inspired me so much. However, I hope that as a team we can further the work of the class of 2025, so that the current students and staff of Del Oro can be proud of the newspaper. I want to take the foundations they created and build on them for the betterment of the program and the school itself.

I think one of the most important parts to the idea of school culture is for students to be involved in school activities. Much can be created in how our teams do and the pride that comes with the school being well rounded both academically and athletically. Besides The Sunburst, I try to be active in participating in school activities such as soccer, track and field, and Mariachi. Outside of school, I spend most of my time just listening to music and watching movies. Movies I like are The Perks of Being a Wallflower, the Twilight series, 500 Days of Summer, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. For music, my favorite artists are Tyler The Creator, Cuco, Kendrick Lamar, The Marias, Radiohead, Billie Eilish, Clairo, Frank Ocean, and DannyLux. With music being a significant part of my life, I’d like to expand our coverage of both topics by conducting movie analyses or album reviews in which students can discuss both new and old releases.

My culture is also something that I hold very near and dear to me, as I grew up with my first language being Spanish, so I will constantly be speaking Spanglish through my regular day-to-day. The Spanish portion is also something I would like to further in the paper, as we have students who predominantly only speak Spanish as to be able to keep everyone who is part of the school informed. Hopefully we can integrate more inclusion towards the Spanish-speaking community by translating stories as well as having stories based on those communities and how it plays into the community here at Del Oro.

Apart from school, as we are a team, I would also love to include ourselves in the papers through a little section in which we can talk about more pop culture topics, such as music and movies, through what the staff may recommend to our classmates, and ideas such as that.

What I expect from the staff is just that I hope we can all find a rhythm and be able to collaborate to make sure the paper reflects our hope and aspiration within what we find enjoyable when creating the Del Oro Sunburst. Apart from that, I just want everyone to have fun and be able to coexist in a positive environment in which we all help and support each other.
