Del Oro’s annual car show cruised through campus again on Saturday, with more entries, vendors and booths packing the quad this time around.
Guests got to see all types of cars, from old school lowriders to dropped trucks to Volkswagen mini vans. Whether you were a car enthusiast or not, there was something to catch your eye and have a good time at the show.
Chris Dutton, Del Oro’s vice principal of instruction, said this year’s event raised $2,000 and drew in 51 entries.
“We wanted to raise at least $2,000,” Dutton said. “More would have been nice, but I’m very happy with the outcome.”
Dutton said the money raised from the event would be used for the school’s academic excellence programs, which includes letterman jackets for students who earn a spot each semester onto the principal’s list.
Viviana Ramirez, activities and athletics office secretary, said one of the show’s goals was to bring a positive event to southeast Bakersfield.
“We want this side of town to have something fun in a nice and safe environment for everyone to go and hang out,” she said. “We’re trying to make sure that we are the center focus of our community and we’re giving [students] every opportunity to have something to do.”
A new addition to this year’s show was a college fair where seniors could find information about various colleges and opportunities after high school. There were booths from various technical schools, the Marines, Bakersfield College, and California State University, Bakersfield.
There were also a lot of food options, like pizza, Chinese food, tacos and Mexican food, and corn, as well as vendors selling merchandise like pens, Stanley straw covers, and plushies.
Some of the clubs that showed off their cars and supported the show included Klassic Dubs, Aztec Image, OriginalS, P Street Tires, Classic Dreams, Thrillist, and Cen Cal.
A full list of the winners in each category was not immediately available; however, the Principal’s Choice award was given to Jorge Calartas with Aztec Image for his red 1963 Chevrolet Impala.
