This Saturday, Del Oro’s ASB presents “A Starry Night Winter Formal” inspired by Vincent Van Gogh. While last year’s winter formal was inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, “The Great Gatsby” and was held in the cafeteria. This year, the ASB has prepared a bigger event off campus.
This year’s winter formal will be at the Bakersfield Music Hall of Fame, 2230 Q Street, and is a definite departure from the cafeteria. The venue is grand in size, with beautiful lighting and a stage for bands at the center of the floor. This leaves plenty of room to get your dance on to live music and DJs. You can see photos of the venue at bakersfieldmusichalloffame.com.
Although Thursday was the last day to purchase formal tickets, the Sun Shack is still open to all students during lunch. In the 900 building, you will find the Sun Shack ready to provide students with the proper attire they need in order to attend formal. Freshman Carlos Montano shared how beneficial the Sun Shack was in providing him with a suit for formal.
“I knew I wanted to go to formal, but I wasn’t sure how I’d be able to get a suit,” he said. “Being able to go in there with my friends and pick out and try on the jackets with them was really cool.”
The Sun Shack is a great outlet to round out the full formal experience and has allowed students to seek various suit or dress styles as they engage in the shopping experience when they otherwise may have not been able to. Along with the Sun Shack, there are other shops that provide formal attire.
The Del Oro FFA’s Sunflower Shop is still selling corsages and boutonnieres for this year’s formal. Stop by the Finance office to make your final orders and payments. For more information, head to the Sunflower Shop to see the beautiful arrangements yourself, or speak with the head of the Agriculture department, Mr. Sharp.
Del Oro is proud to have various resources to assist our students in attending formal. ASB President Khushwant Kaur shared how important it is that we continue to provide these resources as they serve as culture-building for our community.
Kaur shared, “Formal is an experience in which students are able to actively participate in the creation of school culture and traditions, which is something being amplified every year. It goes beyond just a school dance and means so much for the students here at Del Oro.”
Additionally, ASB Rally Commissioner Miley Hernandez Moreno added that it is important that students attend these events that are so pivotal in establishing this school’s culture.
“It is important to go see for yourself how fun formal can be,” she said. “Why say your school is boring when you haven’t participated? It’s about the people that are willing to try.”
ASB members like Kaur and Hernandez Moreno said they are excited for students to attend the first-ever off-campus formal along with inviting all four graduating classes to attend, in hopes that this year’s graduating class will be able to enjoy their last high school formal.
“I am really looking forward to this formal because since this is my last formal, this will also be my last chance to make any last memories with my friends,” said senior Lester Pineda.
As the Class of 2025 prepares for graduation this spring, it is crucial that they enjoy their final moments before adulthood. Like Pineda, every senior should get the chance to attend Winter Formal and experience their final high school days with memories they can cherish.
